A cheap Freshdesk alternative for MSPs, once you price in per-client SLAs

A cheap Freshdesk alternative for MSPs, once you price in per-client SLAs

2026-08-19

The $19 number isn’t the number an MSP actually pays

Search “cheap Freshdesk alternative for MSP” and the thing you’re really reacting to is Freshdesk’s advertised entry price: Growth at $19/agent/month, billed annually, checked live on Freshworks’ own pricing page today, 2026-08-19 (Freshdesk pricing). For a single-company support desk, that’s a genuinely competitive number. For an MSP, it’s the price of a plan that’s missing a feature almost every MSP needs on day one: more than one SLA policy.

Growth ships with ticketing, a shared inbox, a customer portal, a knowledge base, and a basic AI agent bundle — one SLA policy, applied the same way to every ticket regardless of which client it came from. Multiple SLA policies — the ability to set a 1-hour response time for the client paying for priority support and a 24-hour response time for the client on a basic contract — only shows up starting at Pro, $55/agent/month billed annually, per the same live pricing page. That’s not a rounding error on the “cheap” framing; it’s close to a 3x jump in per-seat price to unlock something an MSP can’t really operate without.

Why one SLA policy doesn’t work for a reseller

A company running its own internal help desk can live with one SLA policy, because there’s one set of stakeholders to satisfy. An MSP is structurally different: every client signed a different contract, and those contracts usually specify different response and resolution times based on what they’re paying. Run Growth’s single SLA policy across five clients on three different support tiers and you get one of two outcomes — either the SLA is set to the tightest contract’s terms and the team burns out treating every ticket like a P1, or it’s set to a looser average and the MSP is quietly missing the response times it promised its best-paying clients, with nothing in the software flagging the breach.

Our MSP help desk checklist covers this same gap at a category level — per-client SLA tracking is one of the criteria that separates software built for MSPs from software an MSP is stretching to fit. This article is about what closing that specific gap costs on Freshdesk specifically, in dollars, at MSP scale.

Running the actual numbers at 3, 5, and 8 technicians

All figures below use Freshdesk’s own live Pro-tier price, $55/agent/month billed annually, since Pro is the entry point where per-client SLA policies exist at all:

Technicians Growth (no multi-SLA) Pro (multi-SLA works) Monthly gap
3 $57/mo $165/mo $108/mo
5 $95/mo $275/mo $180/mo
8 $152/mo $440/mo $288/mo

That gap is the real cost of “cheap” for an MSP that actually needs the software to hold different clients to different contracts — a feature most MSPs would consider table stakes, not a premium add-on. And Pro’s $55/agent figure doesn’t include phone support either; Freshdesk has no native voice channel at any tier, since calling is sold separately through Freshcaller with its own per-agent price and per-minute charges, a split we’ve broken down in full in our Freshcaller alternative guide. Add that on top of Pro and an 8-tech MSP wanting per-client SLAs and a working phone line is looking at well over $500/month before a single call runs past its included minutes.

What Enterprise adds — and why most small MSPs don’t need it yet

Freshworks’ top tier, Enterprise, runs $89/agent/month billed annually and layers on Freddy AI Insights, skill-based routing, a sandbox environment, audit logs, and IP whitelisting, per the live pricing page checked 2026-08-19 (Freshdesk pricing). Skill-based routing and audit logs are genuinely useful once a support org is large enough to have specialized queues and compliance requirements — but a 3-to-10-tech MSP is very unlikely to be the buyer those features were built for. The practical takeaway is that Pro, not Enterprise, is the real MSP floor on Freshdesk: it’s the cheapest tier where the software behaves like it knows different clients exist, and it’s still nearly three times Growth’s advertised entry price.

What a genuinely cheap MSP alternative needs to get right

Before treating any vendor’s entry price as the number you’ll actually pay, check whether these are included at that price or gated behind a tier jump:

  1. Per-client (not per-account) SLA policies. Ask specifically whether SLA rules can differ ticket-by-ticket based on which company or contract it belongs to — not just whether the product has “SLA tracking” as a checkbox feature.
  2. What the entry tier is missing, not just what it includes. Vendor pricing pages describe what you get; they rarely headline what’s reserved for the next tier up. Ask directly, or check a live comparison table across tiers.
  3. Whether the jump to the tier you actually need is linear with seats, or a flat multiplier. Freshdesk’s Pro tier isn’t a flat add-on fee — it’s $36/agent more than Growth, so the gap compounds with every technician you add.
  4. Whether voice is bundled or a separate subscription. A per-client SLA fix on the ticketing side doesn’t help if phone support is still a second product with its own bill.

Where ITSM fits into this

ITSM builds per-client SLA tracking into every paid tier, not as a Pro-and-up upsell — Basic is $29/month with 3 seats included, and each additional seat is a flat $5/month, so an 8-tech MSP pays $29 + (5 × $5) = $54/month for ticketing with incidents, requests, problems, changes, a CMDB, and per-client SLA rules, versus Freshdesk Pro’s $440/month for the same technician count. The AI phone agent and browser softphone are separate paid add-ons billed from your account after signup rather than folded into that $54 figure, in the interest of not quoting a number here that isn’t the number you’d actually be charged — but neither requires jumping to a different ticketing tier first, the way Freshcaller does on top of Freshdesk.

Honest note: ITSM is a small product without public customers yet. If per-client SLA handling at MSP scale is the actual problem you’re pricing out, it’s worth running these numbers again yourself against a free signup rather than taking this article’s math on faith.
